چکیده

This study assesses the patterns of variation in body shape, and relations morphological similarity among species Theraps – Paraneetroplus clade order to determine whether shape may be a trait phylogenetic relations. A total 208 specimens belonging 10 were examined. The left side each specimen was photographed; photograph, 27 fixed landmarks placed identify variation. Images processed by using geometric morphometrics, followed principal component analysis. signal for then calculated. To similarity, dendrogram created unweighted pair group method arithmetic mean values, while Procrustes ANOVA post-hoc test used evaluate significant differences between habitats. We found three groups that differed length depth, head size, position mouth eyes. analysis recovered morphotypes seven species, statistical demonstrated eight species. Based on traits associated with cranial morphology, Wajpamheros nourissati (Allgayer, 1989) most No shape; this shows independence from ancestral relatedness, indicating there is little congruence genetic interspecific patterns. As evidenced consistently convergent morphology clade, diversification related an ecological opportunity habitat use exploitation food resources. Although no detected appears morphology-based phylogeny. However, it important intraspecific morphologic plasticity produced segregation or partitioning Therefore, future evolutionary studies should consider structures capture processing food.

Paraneetroplus synspilus is a Junior Synonym of Paraneetroplus melanurus (Teleostei: Cichlidae)

The genus Paraneetroplus (Teleostei: Cichlidae) currently consists of 11 species that naturally occur from southern Mexico south to Panama. Paraneetroplus melanurus (Günther 1862) is found in the Lago de Petén system of Guatemala, and P. synspilus (Hubbs 1935) in the Río Grijalva-Usumacinta system, and other systems in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Reported morphological differences between th...

Diet-Morphology Correlations in the Radiation of South American Geophagine Cichlids (Perciformes: Cichlidae: Cichlinae)

Genera within the South American cichlid tribe Geophagini display specialized feeding and reproductive strategies, with some taxa specialized for both substrate-sifting and mouth brooding. Several lineages within the clade also possess an epibranchial lobe (EBL), a unique pharyngeal structure that has been proposed to have a function in feeding and/or mouth brooding. A recently published genus-...

Body Size Diversity and Frequency Distributions of Neotropical Cichlid Fishes (Cichliformes: Cichlidae: Cichlinae)

Body size is an important correlate of life history, ecology and distribution of species. Despite this, very little is known about body size evolution in fishes, particularly freshwater fishes of the Neotropics where species and body size diversity are relatively high. Phylogenetic history and body size data were used to explore body size frequency distributions in Neotropical cichlids, a broad...

Molecular systematics of the enigmatic Middle American genus Vieja (Teleostei: Cichlidae).

The genus Vieja represents a group of heroine cichlids (Teleostei: Cichlidae) distributed on the Atlantic and Pacific slopes of North and Central America from southern Mexico to Panama. Sixteen species of Vieja are presently recognized; however, based on long-standing taxonomic problems, the genus itself appears to be weakly defined. A number of different generic designations have been proposed...

Revision of the Middle American clade of the ant genus Stenamma Westwood (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Myrmicinae)

Stenamma is a cryptic "leaf-litter" ant genus that occurs in mesic forest habitats throughout the Holarctic region, Central America, and part of northwestern South America (Colombia and Ecuador). The genus was thought to be restricted primarily to the temperate zone, but recent collecting efforts have uncovered a large radiation of Neotropical forms, which rival the Holarctic species in terms o...
